报告摘要:

Since the beginnings of high temperature superconductivity in the cuprates, a key theoretical question has been whether the single band Hubbard model and its cousin, the t-J model, describe the superconductivity at least qualitatively.  While initially this seemed like a simple question, the physics of both the cuprates and the models is now known to be much more complicated.  A key complication is the presence of spontaneously formed striped arrangements of holes, which have been argued (by different people!) to either enhance or to suppress superconductivity.  The models are very challenging to simulate, but even harder to treat analytically.  In this talk I will present new simulation results from both DMRG and quantum Monte Carlo which are closing in on the ground state phase diagrams of these iconic models.

报告人简介:

Professor Steven White is the inventor of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group, one of the most successful algorithms in quantum physics, and he has continued to lead in its further development and in applications since its invention in 1992.  Prof. White got his PhD in 1988 under Nobel Laureate Ken Wilson at Cornell, working on applications of the renormalization group to electronic structure and quantum chemistry, and did a postdoc at UC Santa Barbara before joining the faculty of UC Irvine in 1989, where he has been since then. He won the Rahman Prize for the invention of DMRG, and is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences.
