报告人简介:
Rodney Baxter is an Australian mathematical physicist, originally from Britain, educated at Cambridge and the Australian National University. From 1968 to 1970 he was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, working with Elliott Lieb on lattice models in statistical mechanics. Since then he has been at the Australian National University. In 1971 he calculated exactly the free energy of the planar eight-vertex model, and has solved other models since. In 2013 he was awarded the Royal Medal of the Royal Society of London.
报告摘要:
Many models of interacting two-dimensional systems in statistical mechanics have been solved by using the star-triangle relation to establish commutation relations between the transfer matrices, then finding functional relations that determine the eigenvalues. The first model solved this way was the eight-vertex model in 1971. In this talk I shall recount how in 1980 I stumbled across another model - the hard hexagon model of a lattice gas - that was solvable by this method. Curiously, the solution turned out to naturally involve the Rogers-Ramanujan and related identities. It led to a large class of models that involved generalizations of these identities.
